Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay fell in love with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example that art can be an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to use art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has been for generations. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition to PR, the company has also launched lifestyle networks as well as advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
