DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home of a particular Jury member. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay was immediately hired out of college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
